QUARTER FOUR, WEEK FIVE
Friday, 5/11/12:
**Speech note cards are due Wednesday, 5/16.. This is a homework assignment, and points will be given for having your cards ready on time. It is also important to have your cards ready because you will be given time to practice in class on Wednesday. If you don't have your cards ready, you will be expected to work independently on your speech while others practice.

QUARTER THREE, WEEK NINE
Friday, 3/30/12:
**Read chapters 12 and 13 in The Giver, pages 88-107.
Vocabulary:
**Here are the vocabulary words: palpable (pg.3), distraught (pg.4), apprehensive (pg. 4), and adherence (pg. 12).
** Add the words(with page numbers) to the "Word Knowledge Chart" in the "Word" column and check the box that best represents your current knowledge. Here is a copy of the vocabulary packet if you were absent today: VocabChrt.pdf.
**Find an example In The Giver of how each of the vocabulary wordw is used. Use the page numbers as a guide). Write the sample sentences on the "Words in Sentences" page in the "Sentence from Reading" column.. Write as much as necessary to communicate the word's meaning. Be sure to use MLA citation for the sentences.
**Also find the definitions for each word and write in the "Definition" box on the "Defining the Words" page.
**Do NOT complete the rest of the packet---no examples and non-examples, no original sentences.
**Independent Reading Project will be due Monday, April 30. Here is a copy of the asignment:

**Use your vocab cards to study the definitions for clause, independent clause, dependent clause, simple sentence, compound sentence, and complex sentence. Quiz on Friday. You will not be required to take the quiz if you scored
17 or above on the recent sentence structure quiz.
Tuesday, 3/6/12:
**Summary organizer for "Empress Theodora" due tomorrow.
**If you are doing a rewrite for your RTL essay, it is due tomorrow. If you are not doing a rewrite, but have your essay folder at home, please bring the folder and essay to school for your portfolio.

**If you are rewriting your response to literature essay, the rewrite is due Monday.
Monday, 2/27/12:
**Choose one of the three on-demand sample narrative promprts you were given in class today. Prepare an organizer for the prompt you choose. Organizer is on the back of the green handout -- Writing a Fictional Narrative. Allow yourself no more than 20 minutes for this assignment. You're trying to practice thinking and organizing under time pressure. Organizer is due Wednesday.
**If you are rewriting your take-home response to literature essay, the rewrite is due next Monday, 3/5. Be sure to turn in your entire response to literature folder, including the original graded essay. If you decide not to do the rewrite, please return your folder with the graded essay in it for your portfolio.

Wednesday, 2/15/12:
**Typed final draft of your response to literature essay is due Friday. Remember to turn in your edited rough draft along with the final draft.
**You will be writing an on-demand response to literature essay in class on Friday. If you want to be fully prepared, then review the materials we've worked with in class that are in your response to literature folder.

**Create an essay framework for the response to literature essay that you will be writing. The framework is due on Monday. Please treat this assignment seriously and do a careful, thoughtful job. **The rough draft of a response to literature essay on a story of your choice is due on Monday, 2/13. I will return your rough draft with feedback on Wednesday, 2/15. **We will use the laptops to work on the essay during class on Wednesday and Friday. You will need a memory stick so that you can save your classwork to work on the essay at home. If you don't have a memory stick, try to pick one up this weekend.

**Complete a framework sheet for a possible response to literature essay about "Two Kinds." You may use one of the themes mentioned in class, or you may come up with your own theme for the thesis statement. At least one of the concrete details in each body paragraph must be a quotation.
